A punter, also known as a punner, is a special teams player who must pun to the defense when the offense can not pick up the ball. While most kickers kick balls, some suck balls instead. Particularly religious teams, like the New England Patriots, don't even use punters, and do Hail Marys every 4th down. When not punting at defenses, punters serve the dual role of place holder, bench warmer, or water boy.

Why not just go for it on 4th down?[edit | edit source]

Even though the most experienced NFL and NCAA football coaches insist on using punters, recently casual sports fans have just wondered, "Do we even need a punter? Why not just lob the ball up to T.O. and hope for a lousy pass interference call?"
