The potato famine was a British social experiment designed to test if a people would be stupid enough to base their diet on one single staple and then observe as inevitable disaster struck. The British were correct in that the Irish redesigned their entire livelihood around potatoes. The final results of the experiment where thus:

• Yes some societies are stupid
• The result after the potato blight was a lot of people dying
• The UK helped reduce the pesky Irish population down to managable levels (for a while)

History

At the many revolutionary social ideas were all the rage including communism and facism. However other sociolgists were more intersted in determining small scale experiments that required little active political upheaval. What could be more cheap than getting a people hooked on one single commodity and then sitting back and see what happens?
