Mary Cassette was a well-known nineteenth century artist right up until the time she was convicted of plotting the death of Abraham Lincoln, who happened to be President of the United States at the time. Well-regarded before this, she kind of fell into disrepute and was hung, though not, they say, for any particular painting or anything.

While the assassination of Lincoln went rather well, the plot against Edwin Stanton was unfortunately unsuccessful and for this, the conspirators were hung including this painter who continued painting right up until her death. Her cell, they later found, was done over in a sort of mauve.
