The term nukular family is used to distinguish the family group consisting of one father and one mother, their 2.3 children and their dog spot, from what is known as a "non-traditional" family.
According to Marry'em-Webster the term dates back to 1947 when atoms were used for peace the first time. World War II changed history and put the fear of God back into some folks. Researchers went to Japan to find out why many Japanese families had such 'tight' family units. After dropping the bomb on Japan, it was discovered that some families had exactly 2.3 children - Hence, the term nukular family.
