Holland Tunnel is a tunnel connecting New Jersey to New Amsterdam. The tunnel was finished in the early 1900's, and was constructed singlehandedly by a little boy from North Jersey. The boy, who was on vacation in Toms River, was building sandcastles when he decided to build a hole deep enough to fit his mommy in.
The first tunnel was constructed with the plastic shovel he got from Santa, and the second tunnel was built in half the time because of the plastic toy dump truck he got for his birthday. Upon completion, the tunnel was the first connection between Holland and New Jersey, and would be one of Holland's most important tunnels. Over 500,000 vehicles pass through the tunnel each day.
Planning of the tunnel[edit | edit source]
Stevie stole his sister's Etch-a-Sketch and used it to make a preliminary sketch of the tunnel. Stevie then watched an episode of Sesame Street, and took notes on the segment where Big Bird explained what a circle is and showed pictures of circle shaped objects. Stevie had his dad fix him a PB&J sandwich and apple sauce for lunch. After lunch, Stevie rode his tricycle around the beach to assess the current road conditions, and find a spot to build the tunnel. Stevie left his half finished lollipop in the sand to mark off the spot so he could find it later. When Stevie went to Sunshine Daycare the next day, Stevie played with the toys in the sandbox, then while Storytime Susie wasn't looking, collected the toys which he could use to build his tunnel. Stevie had everything he needed to build the tunnel, and got set to build it the next time the family went down to the shore.
Construction of the tunnel[edit | edit source]
The tunnel was hard to build because of the evil sand gnome. The evil sand gnome lives in a cave right by the beach, and randomly pops out of the sand to scared people. The evil sand gnome hates children the most, though, and kidnaps any kids who go near his cave.
Opening of the first tunnel[edit | edit source]
The opening of the tunnel was a grand event. Schools from across the area took field trips just to see the unveiling of the tunnel. The first person to pass through the tunnel was a girl riding a scooter from Amsterdam who was going to Disney World.
Construction of the second tunnel[edit | edit source]
It became obvious that Holland would need a second tunnel when the traffic in the tunnel grew higher and higher. On average, it took one day to drive between Holland to New Jersey. The children at Stevie's daycare drew him a petition for another tunnel to be constructed to alleviate traffic. Fortunately for Stevie, he had received Bob the Builder's toy dump truck for his 6th birthday.
Conditions inside the tunnel[edit | edit source]
The tunnel is narrow, and traveling through it takes two weeks. Travelers are advised to bring enough food to last them for a month and a pair of scuba diving gear, just in case the sides of the tunnel collapse again.
