Uncyclopedia:Open proxies/old
This is an essay. It is not an ignorable policy on Uncyclopedia, so you should ignore it even more and disregard the mad ramblings of its writer. Or you could submit it as an Uncycloversity assignment in lieu of doing any actual work. |
Open proxies are extremely dangerous. They are frequently used as spambots. They are frequently used for abuse, mainly on Wikipedia, but can sometimes migrate to Uncyclopedia. It is always a good idea, when blocking a spambot, to type that range in Wikipedia and see if there is something that denotes it being a proxy/webhost of some sort, and then to block the range as such. Non admins should also report open proxies to administrators, who can then block them appropriately.
Why open proxies are dangerous[edit source]
Generally, proxies are used for abuse. They do have real, legit purposes, but too many spambots abuse them. The abuse filter which blocks many spambots cannot tell if they are proxies. The easiest way to find out, is
- To go to Wikipedia,
- Type in the IP range, and
- Look up the contributions, and see what arises
What to do if there is a proxy[edit source]
If there is a block for something vaguely relating to proxy usage, immediately report it to an admin. Generally it's blocked for 5 years as anon only, though this can be changed when there is IP Block Exemption
. However, it's better to request it for the length of time that it is blocked on Wikipedia. Sometimes just report other proxies, to prevent abuse.
