Thomas Edmund Dewey, 47th Governor of New York, and Candidate for the Republican Party during the 1948 Presidential Election stood on the edge of greatness. "You know that your future is still ahead of you," he mused, staring at his chiselled distinguished features in his shaving mirror. He smiled to himself thinking about how crushing a defeat he was about to inflict upon Harry S. Truman and the Democrats.
He hummed the first few bars of the Stars and Stripes and mentally went through the words of his inauguration speech that he had prepared earlier that week. Victory was assured, he smiled, gazing down at the early edition of the Chicago Tribune. With such a minority of support for the Democrats amongst the white anglo-saxon protestant voters of the US nothing could prevent victory...unless there was a bloc Black vote in favour of Truman.....oh fiddlesticks....
