Chester Adgate Congdon (1853-1916) was a wealthy capitalist and overlord of Duluth, MN. He is known for his investments in government, dirt mining, and jewels. The Congdon name is most associated with Congdon Avenue in Bisbee, AZ and an unspecified house in Duluth.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Congdon was born and raised in upstate New York. Fears that New York City was going to annex the entire state caused he and his first wife, Clara, to flee. After living in St. Paul, MN for sometime they finally moved to Duluth. They had seven children including their fifth child El Chapo. They built a haunted house as their primary residence that haunts many of the living to this day. His “Adgate” middle name comes from the Two Harbors High School’s mascot The Agates, but he didn’t want to make it seem obvious, so the “d” was added.

Career[edit | edit source]

Inheriting a small sum of several thousand dollars, Congdon took more money from loved ones to start investing. At first he was purchasing tidelands along the coasts, but when small goverments started taking control of those, Congdon began purchasing the governments themselves. His most signifcant investment was the Minnesota House of Representatives. Eventually he got bored in government and sold off all holdings except the City of Duluth.

Afterward he started digging holes in the ground and discovered a new type of soil called “Congdon Clay-Loam.” This type of soil was incredibly fertile for about 14 days before becoming acidic. Farmers of various crops became aggressivly dependent on the soils. His biggest dirt pit was filled with water thus becoming Lake Superior.

One of his pits in Nevada hit a vein of rare jewels worth over 10,000gp each.
