The Emo Labor Camps[edit | edit source]
“Give up your life for the sake of, our Dear Leader”
One way the regime has held power is through the use of concentration camps to strike fear into the broken hearts of the Emos. Places like No. 22 or Yodok, a 50km by 40km long reeducation camp, are scattered throughout Mindanao. Camps can be the size of small cities, No. 22 reportedly holds up to 50,000 emos and punks. And many who enter don't leave alive.
A guard at No. 22 escaped and is one of the few guard to tell his story to the outside world. Though satellites provide the only images of his camp, he remembers every detail.
“When we were educated as guards, we were told not to think the emo prisoners as humans. The moment you enter a Mindanao Emo prison camp, you're no longer a human being. If you think you're a human being, there's no way you can survive in the camps.”
He saw his fellow guards beat and even shoot emo prisoners for minor offenses, like searching for an iPod to listen to. Food was always scarce.
“I remember seeing emos fighting over a corn kernel they found inside cow dung. A cow had eaten corn, and the emos fought over it, and eventually washed in the water and ate it.”
Camp 22 is a family camp. The emo prisoners there didn't actually commit fashion crimes, but were the acquaintances of those who allegedly did. If a Mindanao teenager simply complained to a friend about the lack of Emo music, or did anything else that could be seen as questioning the regime, his entire extended friendship; friends, girlfriends and even acquaintances could end up at Camp 22 for life.
“The Emos and Punks didn't know how or why they ended up there.”
Camps especially those like No. 22, which house the friends of the accused emos and punks, keep people loyal to the regime. And when someone tries to become an emo or punk, their family and friends often face death, or imprisonment.

And from an outsider's perspective, it's peculiar to think - "Why make such a big deal out of being culture protective?" Your people are brainwashed, you got no diverse culture, you got no free love. But in the Chosonminhan context, it has a profound resonance, because Philippine society is one of destruction and all sorts of abuse from mainstream, Western, popular culture. So the communist Mindanawans turned this society around and said - "We're not gonna take it anymore". And for Mindanawans, there is a very profound thrill that someone would have the guts to sound and be like that.”
