“I will have my revenge, Gumball Watterson!”
– Rob, approximately 47 times per episode
Rob (full name: Rob Nobody-Cares-About-His-Last-Name or Rob TAWOG), occasionally called Rich, is an evil cyclops teenager from the animated series The Amazing World of Gumball, notable for being the only character in television history whose entire existence is predicated on being forgotten by both the show's creators and the universe itself.
Later, he would become the sworn enemy of Gumball Watterson, series hero (?). Briefly, Rob took on an identity as Dr. Wrecker, because "Rob" isn't particularly threatening.
Early Life (Or Lack Thereof)[edit | edit source]
Rob was presumably born at some point, somewhere, to someone who immediately forgot about him. Actually, he says that he has no mother while suffering from amnesia in the episode "The Nobody," but maybe she was forgettable too. Anyway, he's a tall, blue cyclops. He has a single, prominent eye that takes up roughly 47% of his face (citation needed, but probably accurate).
Rob was supposedly a background student at Elmore Junior High. His early years were spent in the prestigious position of "Random Kid #47" in classroom scenes, where his primary contribution to the show was taking up approximately 0.3% of screen space and smiling occasionally.
His greatest pre-villain achievement was when Darwin kicked him down a manhole in "The Pony" for being annoying, and then forgot about it immediately.
The Void Incident[edit | edit source]
Rob's life took a super krazy turn when he was banished to the Void - a interdimensional garbage bin where the universe stores all its "mistakes." This happened because the show's continuity literally forgot he existed, which is either brilliant meta-commentary or the writers getting really lazy with explaining plot holes.
He spent his days surrounded by other things that, similarly, don't matter, including: Crazy Frog, the original design for Darwin (which was apparently too terrifying for children), the Platybelodon, and much more...
When Gumball went into the dimension to save Molly, Rob couldn't take it anymore, so he grabbed onto Mr. Small's van as it left and got the hell out—but in the process, his body was disfigured into what looks like someone gave up halfway on designing him.
Thereafter, Rob discovered his true calling: being really, really angry about being ignored, and developing an unhealthy obsession with a blue cat who had absolutely no idea he existed.
Career as a Nemesis[edit | edit source]
Rob's villainous schemes include:
- The Evil Plot to Make Gumball Sad: Failed because Gumball was already sad about other things that day
- The Dastardly Plan to Ruin Gumball's Day: Backfired when Gumball thanked him for the excitement
- The Day of Setting Up Elaborate Death Traps: Failed because Gumball walked around them
- The Sinister Scheme to Get Revenge: Failed when he monologued for too long
- The Remote Control Plot: Attempting to ruin Gumball's life with a magic universal remote, which backfired when he couldn't figure out how to change the batteries
- The Malevolent Machination to Be Remembered: Where he... Actually, I forgot.
Successfully, Rob was making himself slightly more annoying than he was before.
One notable life event happens in "The Ex" where he uses two-eyed binoculars despite only having one eye.
Relationship with Gumball[edit | edit source]
Rob's relationship with Gumball can best be described as "painfully one-sided." While Rob considers Gumball his ultimate enemy and the source of all his problems, Gumball frequently forgets Rob exists and sometimes confuses him for a non-existent "Rich," and on one special occasion, "You."
They had a rom-com sort of thing in "The Ex," however. Despite their antagonistic relationship, many fans suspect that Rob and Gumball are actually best friends who express affection through attempted murder and property damage. Rob is also sometimes interpreted as a "silly little guy."
Darwin, on the other hand, sometimes remembers him. This is primarily because fish have better memories than cats.
Philosophy and Motivation[edit | edit source]
Rob operates under the philosophical principle that "being hated is better than being ignored," which makes him either very wise and heroic, or very sad, depending on your perspective.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Rob is the only villain to be defeated via nobody interacting with him
- It could be argued that Rob is bald
- The color of Rob's midriff changes color between pink and static depending on how lazy the animator's attention to detail is
- He is one of the few characters to be aware that he exists in a cartoon, though he uses this knowledge primarily for complaining and justifying trying to kill people
- Rob's character design was created by accidentally leaving a pencil mark on a piece of paper
- Rob is the only Gumball character to experience existential horror, making him the most philosophically complex character by default
- Rob is the closest thing to "lore" in Gumball
- Notwithstanding his evil persona, he sometimes still says "please" and "thank you" in the show
- Despite being the show's main villain, Rob has probably caused less actual damage than Darwin on a good day
