A dark horse is a participant in a contest that is not expected to win. The term was coined by Jesse Owens, who ran like a horse but was not expected to win any races, because blacks were typically considered inferior.
In a literal sense, it is a direct opposite to the possibly mythical White horses, which, depending on whether you are dumb/believe that White horses exist, means that Dark horses may or may not exist. It is impossible for both white and dark horses to exist at the same time. If you believe in one, you cannot believe in the other.
