For the place in Dorset, see Dorset you idiot.

“Wear the fox hat? Aha hahah hahah.”

“Goddawful swamp. Seriously, I can't stand being there. Just the thought of the place makes me want to shit m-... ...DAMN. ”

~ Kiri Te Kanaewerms

“It's OK I guess, the cheese is better in Akaroa though. Lots of parking inside the cheese shops, especially those owned by my brother-in-law. ”

~ Mayor of Christchurch

“It's Mummy! She's terribly hurt! ”

~ Pauline Parker (not Kate Winslet)

Christchurch is a gordforsaken place reputed to be in New Zealand, reputedly named when the minister arriving there initially said "Oh Christ so this is the place, well I suppose I'd better look in at the church before I break out the whisky".

Geography[edit | edit source]

The city was once flat, but then a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit and now there are lots of nice little jagged hills everywhere. the city shows deep grey undertones wherever one looks (the inhabitants also try to mimic their surroundings by insisting to wear grey to the nth degree). The sweeping valleys, the Port Hills, the iceberg and earthquake prone Southern Alps are nothing to marvel at. Maybe only The Chalice in The Square - also grey. I wonder why it all happened.

Government[edit | edit source]

Christchuch City Council Executive consists of 20 seats including 5 sheep, 5 cows, 9 humans and one TV or Radio Personality. The council meetings are described as being often like trying to herd cats. The main purpose of the council is to argue a lot until one council member finally claims the moral high ground. The sheep tend to vote specifically on the impact of any decision on the provision of grass. Otherwise they follow each other on every issue which makes it frustrating for the humans and the radio/tv personality. The TV personality doesn't care what happens so long as they look good doing it.

The council employees try to ignore these games much as possible and get on with doing the right thing. Unless a council member specifically asks them to do something else. At the end of every year, there is usually some money left over that needs to be spent quickly. The council usually spends this money on more road markings, signs and extra speed humps.

It has been speculated that if you were a developer ten years ago the best way to get your scheme approved by the council was to have a in-law elected by bank rolling their election campaign. Occasionally, when the local newspaper attempted to investigate in the past, councillors were known to suddenly disappear. Rumour had it that a mysterious triangle formed by the intersection of Cashel Street, Colombo Street and High Street hid an underground bunker where elected officials could hide in the event of disasters, civil unrest, boredom or adverse media interest.

This in-law theory is one attempt to explain the proliferation of massive suburban shopping malls around the city centre which has removed all the unnecessary socio-economic activity from central city. Over the long term, this has created a much less congested experience for overseas visitors and in the short term this has delivered some key benefits for tourism.

Attractions[edit | edit source]

A chief attraction in Christchurch is that it is highly decorated with KU KLX KLAN members. Cantabrians are so proud of being the racist capital of New Zealand that they stand by it to only allow only 3 non pakeha players in their super 15 team. Probably the reason to why they suffered an earthquake recently.

The pride of Canterbury, the cathedral (similar to every other damn cathedral in the world except this one now has earthquake damage) is beloved by Canterbarbarians as it is all they have to make them unique (which they clearly aren't)

Mugging is one of Christchurch's key growth areas with visitors from around the world now experiencing the wide variety of high quality petty crime on offer. Attention to detail and anticipation are hall marks of what the local criminals have to offer. In fact, Christchurch is now world famous in NZ for setting new standards in the pursuit of the finest felony-based experience.

[Trev: try and stick a few more long words in here, doesn't matter what they mean but just to make it sound a bit flash for the punters eh? Bit like those travel vids your sister brought back from Oz. Onya.]

Then why not spend the evening perusing the high quality gift shops, jostling with coach loads of Japanese tourists for the popular paua shell set in resin kiwi shaped key rings and over priced packets of "kiwi poo" chocolate covered raisins. It really doesn't get any better than this!

Then why not visit any one of a number of bars and cafes and imagine you're somewhere in Europe. The wine is priced just within the reach of snobs, the local dishes are given reassuringly pretentious names and the disposal of any unwanted handbags by local junkies is but a mere courtesy gesture extended to all of the city's most valued visitors.

Then why not afterwards explore some of the historic alley ways and side streets. Yes, just like any historic European city, no expense is spared in creating the right ambiance of discarded syringes, litter and degraded surfacing. Often gangs of teenagers will assemble here, free of charge, to proffer insults, large quantities of carefully prepared, home made saliva and show great interest in items of clothing and valuables. Upon leaving, these teens are more than happy to escort you discretely, at a distance, to your next destination. This consideration is the hall mark of what sets Christchurch apart from other key tourist destinations.

[Trev: reckon you should stick the hilarious bit in here about the japanese cyclist, the tram tracks and that paua inlaid garden gnome that got nicked from Bruce's a while back which meant you had to go to A&E. Bloody pissed myself at that one mate.]

Then why not

The highlight for those tourists who would like the full package is a gentle trip floating unconscious down the Avon River, creating many new opportunities for the local wildlife to appreciate the view. The local police take a great interest in reports of petty crime, finding them hilarious. Particularly where incidents involve towel wielding German tourists who keep repeating that they don't understand what has happened, cyclists who get their wheels stuck in tram tracks, Asian Boy Racers who come off the road while power power sliding around the Summit Road and assault rifles.

History[edit | edit source]

Most of the history of Christchurch has been lost, because it was used in the production of sheep friendly condoms, but we have managed to piece together a few key events:

Samuel, the first of the three emus on his second birthday
  • 600 BC - Christchurch's first McDonalds established, initially in the middle of a flax swamp on what would then become Riccarton Road. History shows this to have been a far sighted move.
  • 99 BC - McDonalds offered the first tangy Moa Burger, with a free coke and fries.
  • 100 BC - First Chinese tourists visited and saw great business potential for takeaways. Set up first Chinese takeaway.
  • 0 AD - Maori colonised the area and lodged a land claim against the local Chinese, because their takeaway had been set up without taking local indigenous people into consideration. A battle ensued during which all the Chinese were killed and, as worthy losers, they were finely diced with some bread crumbs, onion, glue, tabasco sauce and three hundred litres of tomato ketchup to take the nasty taste away.
  • 1 AD - Maori settlers took over local Chinese takeaway and offered an alternative form of Chinese takeaway. Eventually ran out of Chinese ingredients and offered deep fried pies, pork, puha and "shitter fritters". Budget conscious kai made from leftovers for those blokes coming in for a feed after a night on the bevvies.
  • 600 AD - First Dutch tourists visited and decided to stay. Dey were loikin eet ferrrrrrry much sho deshided to call the plaishe New Sheeland after a part of Dutchland called Old Sheeland. Because they were stoned most of the time they thought this was hilariously ironic. They also planted first marijuana crop which went down very well with the general population.
  • 606 AD - Local maori lodged a land claim with the Dutch because their very successful marijuana plantations had been set up without giving due consideration to local indigenous people. The Dutch replied, saying

"Fuck yash, we goin' to grow thish shtuff anyway," and carried on harvesting their crops.

  • 607 AD - Local maori were outraged and staged a land march protest. Dutch capitulated somewhat and offered the protesters cookies as gesture of goodwill at the negotiations but protestors refused on point of principal. The Dutch came back after deep frying the cookies in batter and the protestors jumped on the Dutch, scoffing the lot and licking the plates clean afterwards. The Dutch didn't mention the cookies eaten by the Maori had been spiked and very soon the local Maori were either staring into infinity, stoned out of their gourds, or sleeping soundly.

"Ha ha" shaid the Dutch, "we got ur ashes, tooooooooime to make shum naughty Dutch adult filmsh, yesh yesh..." and spent the rest of the day also stoned and giggling inanely at their own painful attempts to learn how to light farts.

  • 608 AD Dutch got bored with making naughty Adult filmsh because Maori had a lot of "funny bones" but no naughty shensh of humour. They were also fed up with eating nothing but takeaways so, after the last harvesht of whacky baccy, they set sail and left the local Maori feeling shore in more waysh than one. Yesh yesh.
  • 1337 AD - French Whalers arrived in Akaroa and set up a plastic cheese farm using plastic cows, to cater for the takeaway businesses.
  • 1338 AD - McDonalds takeaway started offering plastic cheeseburgers.
  • 1739 AD - Local Maori lodged a land claim with French cheese farm whalers saying that the whales had been taken on Maori land and were the property of the local indigenous people. The French settlers were indignant. The French women in particular were insulted at this outrage and threw hissy fits. They tossed their hair provocatively and pouted petulantly until their husbands reluctantly agreed that they should all move somewhere chic with more pavement cafes, bijou designer dog poo, patisseries and more strikes.
  • 177-something AD - Christchurch was discovered by Captain Cook. The English felt that it was very important they'd discovered NZ and noted this in their history books so they could announce it to everyone in Europe. In the meantime, they decided to tidy the place up a bit with some nice oak trees, a few churches and a spot of whitewash, some rats, cats, pigs, goats, possums and influenza. They also carried on the proud but appalling tradition of mispronouncing foreign place names including "Christchurch" (Otutahi), "Mt Egmont" (Mt Taranaki) and "South Island" (Te Waka o Aoraki). Pretty soon, they believed they were back in the UK but with more sun, some "simply lovelydarling" local Maori restaurants and a bit more space, just like every other fucking English tourist.
  • 1780 AD - Twenty million sheep colonised NZ, on a cheap 1 bob fare from Australia.
  • 1781 AD - Sheep set up takeaways offering a wide variety of ethnic grass dishes including clover, rye, fescue, browntop and tussock.
  • 1782 AD - Sheep expanded their highly successful takeway operation into new markets by offering deep fried option.
  • 1783 AD - Local maori lodged land claim against the local sheep population for setting up their sheep-lifestyle orientated fast food empire without giving due consideration to local indigenous people. Sheep took the local Maori population to court and won, arguing that in fact local indigeous people HAD been taken into consideration through the offer of a deep fried option.
  • 1784 AD - Local maori take their own maori-born and educated lawyer to court arguing that the 2% fee he charged for the successful outcome of cases was extortionate. The case remains open to date with both parties embroiled in an extremely bitter spat.
  • 1959 AD - UK stopped buying sheep from NZ.
  • 1967 AD - Due to lack of interest, the weather was cancelled
  • 1977 AD - NZ stopped selling sheep to the UK
  • 1988 AD - Great white flight to Brissie. Average intelligence of NZ and Australian populations increased dramatically. Apart from Twizel.
  • 1989 AD - Someone in the Labour government realised that NZ actually had started to develop a culture of its own.
  • 1991 AD - The sheep continue to expand their operation in an intimate partnership with local farmers, eventually developing a highly successful global conglomerate "Baager Me". Eventually the conglomerate negotiated a controlling stake in McDonalds through the backdoor.
  • 1999 AD - Bizarre but bloody hilarious event involving my mate Bruce, his paua inlaid garden gnome, a japanese cyclist and some tram tracks.
  • 1998 AD - Time started to run in reverse for a year
  • 2005 AD - The Asian invasion peaked - influx of immigrants from South Korea to NZ resulted in the average intelligence of Korean and Avonhead populations rising dramatically.
  • 2008 AD - Nothing happened. - Oh wait, Yea bus prices went up 20 cents... Yea thats all...
  • 2009 AD - Amanda Pullan attempted to lose her virginity but was unsuccessful.
  • 2009 x2 AD - Chris Grueber finally stopped fucking stalking me
  • 2009 AD (3) - 3 stoners finaly realised that hanging around outside KFC and BK on colombo street only leads to getting arrested, shit tinnys, unwanted fat ugly chicks, herpes, depression, the desire to kill everyone within a 500 meter radius and steal all their money to buy decent weed from a dealer that isn't a 16 year old emo-kid from KFC. "Oh how easy it would be".
  • 2009 AD (4) - D Lounge at the exchange was opened. Buzzy shit.
  • 2010 AD - The Emperor of Christurch, Bob Hope, resolves to dismantle ecan, which is internet slang for "electronic can". This has propelled Christurch into the record books as the world's largest producer of Letters to the Editor written by monkeys.
  • 2010 AD - A 7.1 earthquake hit destroying some buildings!
  • 2011 AD - Earthquake hits again,
  • 2012 AD - Earthquake hits yet again and everyone hits the bloody roof.

Sports and Past times[edit | edit source]

  • Getting absolutely stoned in the Gardens, climbing trees then marrying them.haha
  • Tipping loads of detergent into city fountains.
  • Getting very drunk, jumping out suddenly at Japanese tourists and going "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!" or "BOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRIIIISS" before running off.
  • Bitch-slapping German tourists, especially if they carry towels or are dressed like they're going to spend a day in the mountains.
  • Romantic evenings in The Dunes at North New Brighton (also known as "The Bums" because its one of Christchurch's favourite but least spoken about places to have sex).
  • Setting the doors of the BK toilets on Columbo St on fire with lighter fluid, hammering on the door hard and then running away.
  • The kind of racism that begins with "I'm not a racist, but..."
  • Finding any excuse to whine about the Poms winning the rugby or cricket on local radio. (Although this seems to have some what lessened in recent years)
  • Finding any excuse to whine about the Aussies winning the rugby or cricket on local radio.
  • Finding any excuse to whine about the loads of whiners on local radio.
  • Smoking weed in the botanical gardens and trying to catch the ducks that asian tourists are photographing. Some inner-city potheads and stoners SOMETIMES gather the motivation to drag themselves to the port hills to smoke. Good old Cocayne Gardens and Hell's Gate.
  • Winding Dave the security guard at the bus exchange up to see how far he will go before trespassing the whole lot of us.
  • Radio Ron. the cherished wandering minstrel and official cultural ambassador of Christchurch.
  • Seeing how long it takes for some degenerate to set your streets porta-shitter on fire.

Transport[edit | edit source]

The city has an extensive network of buses which only the poor, sick, disabled and banned drivers use. And then there are the mentally deranged ppl who always seem to be talking to you, but then you relise u dont actually exist

Everyone else drives everywhere, even down to the end of the drive to get the mail. Some Christchurch people are so used to driving that they have lost the power to walk completely, even driving into bed at nights and to the bathroom.

Local retailers in the city believe that car parking is the key to success. It was rumoured that Hallenstines clothing store in the City Mall once applied for a planning approval to develop a drive in option for their changing room areas. Fortunately the manager of the Hallenstines store did not, at the time, have an in-law elected to the council.

The police take an active interest in both spending public money effectively AND promoting driver safety. For example, it has been known for the most conscientious police officers to pull over and ticket drivers travelling below the legal open road speed limit of 10km/h, on the basis of recycled speed camera readings.
