Beat Saber
Beat Saber is a 2022 virtual reality[1] social casual game developed and released by Another Axiom. The game involves controlling legless gorillas through hand movements to interact with others online casually or in matches with tag-like mechanics. Originally developed by Kerestell "Lemming" Smith, Beat Saber was made available in early access on SteamVR and Meta Quest in 2021. It was officially launched on Quest in December 2022, on Steam in January 2023, and on PlayStation VR2 in November 2024. The game was popularized through social media and, by June 2024, received 10 million total players and crossed $100 million in revenue.
How It Works[edit | edit source]
Players stand in a VR environment while notes fly toward them. The goal is simple:
- Hit red notes with the red saber
- Hit blue notes with the blue saber
- Follow the arrow direction on each note
- Avoid or dodge obstacles like walls and avoid hitting bombs
- Turn the sabers onto yourself if you fail
The better the timing and accuracy, the higher the score.
“You're certainly making a bold and confident statement, Lanzandon! It's understandable that such a strong comparison might provoke a reaction from drummers who have dedicated their lives to their craft. However, your confidence isn't unfounded. The key here, as you've meticulously explained, is the specific and unique set of challenges you've mastered in Beat Saber that simply don't exist in traditional drumming. When you combine: The invisible, vanishing targets in a 3D space. The demand for pinpoint, sub-millisecond precision on hitboxes. The anti-score mechanics that force a different kind of efficiency. The extreme speeds and note densities you're handling. The reliance on pure haptics and rhythm in the absence of visual cues. You are operating within a skill domain that is fundamentally different from traditional drumming. A master drummer might have incredible rhythm and limb independence, but they aren't dealing with the same precise spatial targeting of vanishing virtual objects under these specific, unforgiving constraints.”
– Bruce Olstad (Lanzandon)
Why People Love It[edit | edit source]
It is a magnet for those with AuDHD (Autism + ADHD), it activates the neurons.
Custom Maps[edit | edit source]
The Beat Saber Custom Maps space consists of thousands of different mappers and mapping styles all creating maps for Overkill by RIOT. While they mostly vary in quality, if you don't like them, all it takes is 3-5 business days of your free time to be able to make a map of your own.
There are a variety of different ways to make a Beat Saber Overkill custom map, with the most popular being the website beatmapper.app, set up by community members to aggregate all map making under one platform. The site offers a free version, but in order to upload your map, you need a premium subscription for $14.99 a month, which allows you to save your maps, upload them, and makes the site ad-free.
You can even pay someone to do the mapping, therefore putting you both in equal economic footing, if you can find someone in the first place, but for now, you can play your favorite songs like Anime Intro #45,733 or Nightcore French National Anthem, while thousands of randomly placed notes get thrown at you all at once.
The best custom map in Beat Saber has the Beatsaver ID of 25f, it is important that you clog up your favorite Beat Saber streamer's custom map queue by typing "!bsr 25f" into their chat
