Forum:Extension:MultiPages
This MediaWiki extension allows for server-side batch deleting of pages via manually-entered list or by uploading a text file. Sounds pretty neat, especially with all this talk of batch deleting thousands of images. Without a sever-side solution a batch delete is pretty reliant on JavaScript, which is bad for the admins (it's slow and requires CPU power), for the servers (requires bandwidth), and for RecentChanges patrollers (deleting lots of files can take hours, rendering RC useless during that time).
On a related note, this extension allows admins to batch delete pages created by a particular user. Seems pretty handy if a vandal comes along and creates a ton of pages, which can and has happened when admins are asleep (just kidding, we're never awake).
Do we want these? – Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize • writings • critchat) 02:51 Mar 12, 2011
ADDENDUM: Alternatively there is also this extension, which not only handles batch deletions (which is pretty useful unto itself) but also batch page moves (think: complex articles, such as multi-page articles and games, getting userspaced). – Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize • writings • critchat) 03:01 Mar 12, 2011
- Hell no.
- Of course. How are we supposed to get Wikia to acquiesce, though? ~ 03:02, 12 March 2011
- Wikia are far better listeners than the userbase's constant raging would imply (see here). If there's enough of a desire for these extensions - which is what I created the forum to find out - I'm sure someone could contact Wikia and ask them politely. – Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize • writings • critchat) 03:05 Mar 12, 2011

- Couldn't we op a bot to do deletions? (I nominate Fnoodle.) It would "hide" the edits, and work automatically. However, I think a bot can do 720 edits an hour (assuming an edit every 5 seconds), which works out to 17,280 edits a day, assuming its running constantly. --Mn-z 03:42, March 12, 2011 (UTC)
- That only solves the problem of Recent Changes though. It still depends upon someone's computer running continuously over a hopefully uninterrupted connection, and it's hard to fulfill either. Plus, I'm pretty sure AutoWikiBrowser doesn't allow a bot to automatically delete, but that's a minor problem - we've still got the time and bandwidth to contend with. – Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize • writings • critchat) 03:55 Mar 12, 2011
- About how many images are we talking about? --Mn-z 03:57, March 12, 2011 (UTC)
- Several thousand. And this isn't just about that - mass deletions happen all the time on a smaller scale (example: qVFD). Even if a capable user such as yourself volunteers to bot-delete a bunch of stuff this specific time, sure, that's a help right now, but in the long run we'd be better off with a server-side batch delete for the reasons I listed above. – Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize • writings • critchat) 04:01 Mar 12, 2011

Obviously
This forum isn't going to get anywhere without a poll. So here it is.
Should we ask Wikia for Extension:MultiPages?
What it does:
Batch page moves and batch page deletions. Note we only have JS to do one of these (hint: it's delete).
Uses:
- Clear out qVFD
- Delete multi-page articles, such as games
- The upcoming Image Exodus
- Mass move pages into and out of userspace
- The possibilities are endless
Pros:
- No messing about with JavaScript
- Faster
- Won't clog up RecentChanges for hours
- Less bandwidth usage on Wikia's side
Cons:
- Asking Wikia
Do it
- Let's do it! – Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize • writings • critchat) 19:27 Mar 12, 2011
- Of course. ~ 19:28, 12 March 2011
- For. per above. --Mn-z 20:06, March 12, 2011 (UTC)
Don't do it

- I'm all for huffing crap and all that, but IIRC MultiPages' code was quite messy the last time I checked it. I would suggest using one of the more stable alternatives, such as mw:Extension:Nuke (used on all Wikimedia wikis, such as Wikipedias, MediaWiki.org, etc.), mw:Extension:DeleteBatch (written by Wikia's Bartek Łapiński and improved by yours truly and various other people) or mw:Extension:Maintenance (it's just plain awesome, like its author). -- 01:17, March 13, 2011 (UTC)
- We have Nuke... but only Wikia people are allowed to use it. ~ 01:22, 13 March 2011
- $wgGroupPermissions['sysop']['nuke'] = true; and problem solved and the universe was saved (once again)! Seriously, ask Wikia to do that. -- 01:24, March 13, 2011 (UTC)
