Generalisimo George Corley Wallace Jr. (August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998) was an American politician who served as Governor and Dictator of the state of Alabama. He served two consecutive terms as governor of the state from 1963 until 1967. Due to the state's laws regarding consecutive term limits for governors and his desire for power, he had his wife Lurleen Wallace installed as a puppet governor and proclaimed supreme rule over the state of Alabama by appointing himself as the "Dictator of Alabama" 1967.

Governor of Alabama: The First Two Terms (1963-1967)[edit | edit source]

Wallace made his first bid for governor in 1963. Since Republicans were banned from state politics dating back to re-construction, the Democratic primary was the defacto general election. In the primary, Wallace faced former Alabama governor "Big" Jim Folsom; a man who gave Wallace his start in politics years earlier. In a stunning act of betrayal, Wallace secretly placed a combination of LSD and Rufinol into one of Folsom's 50+ daily cocktails on the eve of election day.

That night on television, 98% of Alabama voters witnessed a drunken, befuddled, and confused Folsom incoherently discuss why they should vote for him. He even attempted to talk about his family life but failed to even remember several of his children's own names while pictures dancing women interchanged with upside down family photos appeared in the background. This convinced the Alabama voters that Wallace was the right man for the job and on the following day of the Democratic primary, he was overwhelmingly chosen as the party's candidate and effectively the new Governor of Alabama.

During his first 2 terms, Wallace played a pivotal role in the struggle for civil rights. Since segregation was so popular among the voters of the state, Wallace decided that he would become one himself and exploit it to his political advantage. Some examples of this were barring negro citizens from going to school at local universities in order to anger President Kennedy and make him activate the National Guard. He would then alert the media and have the whole act televised to bring attention to himself. This would not be the first time he used his pulpit to inform the proletariat of Alabama that the evil imperialists in Washington were always threatening to invade the state or infringe on state's rights.
