This photo was originally the creation of a research team in the Political Science department of George Washington University. The group was tasked with the creation of a cutting-edge computer simulation that could provide graphical representations of current world events. This photograph, first made public at a February 18, 2007, press conference, represents what the researchers regard as their first near success: the complexities and nuance of American foreign policy in the Middle East reduced to a single image.

The original image, however, was subsequently altered by the research team to eliminate the layers of pickle relish and catsup that coated the rug in the computer model's first product. The university-affiliated team suggested that "While the original model probably provides a more technically accurate image, [they] felt as though the presence of the condiments coupled with the presence of an attractive woman was too distracting for the average viewer seeking an understanding of the subtleties of contemporary international relations." --MattSandwich 01:16, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
