The original pictures have no copyright. The left picture is a clipping from Henry Holiday's wood block printing (1876) for the chapter "The Banker's Fate" of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark". The woodblocks are now are owned by the Library of Toronto. The right picture is "The Allegory of Iconoclasm" (1566-1568) by Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder. The etching now is owned by the British Museum. The comparison (color marks) is under Creative Commons license 2.0 by Goetz Kluge, Munich, Germany 2009-01-30. The relation between Holiday's illustrations and Gheeraerts' etching has been discovered in December 2008 using a method developed by Galileo Galilei in the 16th century: In order to understand things you have to look at them. However, the "Allegory of Iconoclasm" is not cute. That is why many people do not want to look at it. Therefore it may take another century unil they will understand the history of Holiday's illustrations. (See also http://lc.snrk.de/amazonjp.cgi)
