Didgeridoo Hero is an award-winning video game produced by Australian developer Outback Gamehouse. The game uses a didgeridoo peripheral to provide players with a virtual didgeridoo experience that realistically emulates circular breathing, a single droning note, and monotony. The licensed soundtrack contains hits from classic didgeridoo artists from around the world, including Italian artists Ilario Vannucchi's hit album "Sleeping Stones" and legendary Mark Atkins's "The Sound of Gondwana: 176,000 Years in the Making."
Didgeridoo Hero was released in 2006 to critical and popular acclaim. The game sold over 10 million copies worldwide, 10 million of those copies being sold in Australia. Outback Gamehouse is currently planning a second Didgeridoo Hero title that will support multiplayer.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Didgeridoo Hero plays very similarly to other music and rhythm games. Players must hit notes as they scroll down a slowly-moving track. Didgeridoo Hero adds a twist in that songs rarely contain more than a single note and may continue for up to several hours at a time. To hit notes, players must constantly breathe into the didgeridoo peripheral. Breaking the air flow or taking a breath results in instantly losing the song. Holding notes for longer than the song's length awards players with Aboriginal Power, a feature can be used to earn reparations in an edition of Didgeridoo Hero to be released several hundred years from now.
The game includes a robust career mode in which players can follow in the footsteps of a real didgeridoo player as they work their way up from poverty, accompany a well-known artist for a single concert before the gimmick is abandoned, then back to poverty as they attempt to apply for real jobs at local offices, citing didgeridoo performance as proper job experience for handling insurance claims. In addition to Quick Play for trying specific songs, Didgeridoo Hero also boasts Long Play mode for creating seemingly endless and annoying droning noises. This feature is rumored to be carried over for the upcoming Bagpipe Hero.[citation needed]
