The Dingwall Cant is a colourfully quaint language which its origins originate from the sprawling metropolis of Dingwall.

This is the extensive, ever expanding Dingwall Cant Dictionary.

The Cant

  • Aaahraarr - Other.
  • Alexander backhander - What wuds refer to as a punch
  • Anaahraarr - Another
  • Arsh - Bum.
  • Aaaaveeeeess - "Thats bad". "Aaaveeeess I'm telling maaaam" A pig's laying on to the little beast
  • Baaaaarrie - Excellent e.g. "Ah seen seen that fillum Mac an' Me up at the pictshursh the aaahraarr night, an' it was pure baaaaarrie, leeek".
  • Beast - Ugly woman e.g "Ow wow coff, deek the Beast outside Tescos
  • Beek' - Face e.g "Deek yer "Beek" later on. Meaning see you later.
  • Bint - Girlfriend.
  • Bits - Beaten up wud style e.g "Ow wow radge I'm gonna put you in bits"
  • Blinky - Window.
  • Bluterred - (1) Pissed e.g " I was pure bluterred' last night, (2) Bursht e.g " I got pure bluterred last night by some radge
  • Braahaaarrr - Brother.
  • Buckshee - To get something for free
  • Bursht - To hit/ kick someone in e.g. "Ah seen that Jakey Stewart deekeen at ma manishee fanny, so ah took him outside an' pure bursht 'im."
  • Chief Chorer - A very experienced thief of goods from Woolworths who has never been caught or even chased by the fuzz.
  • Chore - To steal. Man "Thems a pure barrie pair oa' trainersh yiv got on there" Burglar - "Aye, like. Ah pure chored them from Woolies.
  • Coff - A person, usually a man.
  • Chow - A sweetie that cost between 1p and 2p. Man 1 "Whosssat yer eateen thayre? Geeeeeyuz wan!". Man 2 "Naaaat! Yir no' getteen enneee a' ma chows". Man 1 "Geeeyuzz waaan". - This is usually followed by Man 2 spitting all over his penny chows so Man 1 cannot eat one.
  • The Crack - The same as the craic but not as exciting.
  • Deek - Look. Eg. "Ow wow coff, Deek 'i manishee wi the size ten trods" meaning look at that woman with big feet.
  • Dieved - Annoyed.
  • Dingin - Raining
  • EEEEEEEEHHHH? - What?
  • Faahhaarrrr - Father.
  • Faaaanny - Funny.
  • Fams - Hands.
  • Feekked - Knackered.
  • Feekkers - For fucksake.
  • Feekkiees - The Police.
  • Fladge - Idiot.
  • Gaaadgee/Gaaaaadge/Gudgie/Gudge - A man.
  • Guffey - A fool. "Aaah'm not getteen on no plane, guffey", Mr T in Dingwall.
  • Jackie shuffle - To outwit someone with your skills of faking dragging your foot over the football whilst hitting a 1st year!
  • Jakeeey - Friend
  • Jamp - Past tense of jump.
  • Jar - The cost of something. Gudge 1 "Here mun, how much them pure smart trainersh jar ya?" Gudge 2 "Nnnnaaaaahhhheeen, I pure chored them from woolies."
  • Jarring - To give someone a telling off.
  • Kaaaatlerrrry - Fork/Knife/Spoon etc
  • Kilt - Killed
  • Loodney - Fool/Idiot
  • Lordy Coff - A dirty, smelly poor person who would probably eat chewing gum that he/she has chiseled off the pavement and wears the same pants for two months.
  • LorryCar - Pickup truck for Wuds
  • Maaaanimall - Ugly Woman
  • Maaaanishee- Woman.
  • Maahhaarraaarr - Mother.
  • Maaaanneeeee - Money (Not to be confused with maaaaannie).
  • Maaaaannie - A man.
  • Mappich - Drunk. e.g "Ah pure tried ta get passt that mallard lasst night but it wis pure mappich an' ah couldn' get pasht it. Pure frightneeeeen an' that it was, that big duck an' that."
  • Mink - See Minker.
  • Minker - A dirty, smelly poor person who would probably spit chewing gum on the pavement then chisel it off and eat it again.
  • Mobile shanty - Caravan
  • Mort - Woman.
  • Moth - Big/ something very good e.g. "ya should pure shee wot ah did to ma Renilt Kleeo an' tha'. Itsh pure shooaaaund, itsh pure got a moth shpoiler an' itsh pure moth. An ah lowred the shushpenshin, an that. An' itsh got a moth eggausht, pure cherry bomb. Shaaaaound. Pure moth , mun. - A Dingwall boy racer discussing how powerful his 1.2 litre car is.
  • Mun - Man
  • Munter - Ugly woman
  • Murd/Murdo - What you call someone when you dont know their name. e.g Alright Murd, what like?
  • Nexie - (1)Oh my goodness. e.g "Nexie look at the Fladge" (2)To get something for nothing e.g "it cost me Nexie"
  • Nut/Naaaat - No.
  • Pig's layin on - A dingwall assault on another person ie."I gave her a right pigs layin on"
  • Putters - Feet.
  • Radge - Idiot.
  • The Randan - Going out to bars to consume alcohol purely with the purpose to get intoxicated.
  • Saaaheeen - Something.
  • Scone - Head.
  • Shandeekan - Crazy/Weird e.g "Ow wow coff, Deek 'i Shandeekan maaaanashee/gudgie"
  • Sharn - Dung/ shite. e.g. "Ah wish walkeen daaown Fingle Road the aaahraarr day, ya shood've sheen the amaamount a' dog sharn on the pavement, it wis leeeek dooween wan a' them army traineeen hingsh that ya have ta go froo the tyresh. Ah neeerleee got sharn on ma new white trainersh an' tha' "
  • Sheckles - Money.
  • Sheesht - agreement/acknowlegdement e.g. Man 1: "What a shape yer man wis in owitside the rock last night" - Man 2: "Sheesht! he wis ti the neck!"
  • Slut - Thanks alot.
  • Snots/Snotters - Cash/Money e.g. It cost me forty snotters
  • Spaawwnny - Lucky
  • Splattered - See Bursht
  • Spon/Spondolux - Cash/Money
  • Spot on -perfect.
  • Spotty Dog- used to express gratitude.
  • Squid - Reference to money, e.g it cost me a million squid
  • Stop it - agreement/acknowledgement e.g. Man 1: "The tunes were beastin in the rock last night eh" - Man 2: "Stop it!"
  • Stowwed - Busy
  • Teek Aye - Great.
  • Tickity Boo - Great/Fine/Good
  • Thingir - Finger
  • Tort - opposite of Mort
  • Transistor van - What wuds call a Ford Transit
  • Trods - Shoes.
  • Whaluheek? - How are you?
  • Whaaaryeee tryeeeen taaasaaay? - Pardon me, what did you say?
  • Whasscrack? - How are you today?
  • What ya on? - What are you up to today?
  • What ya saying? - Hows it going?
  • Worser - Worse than worse
  • Wud/wuddie/waaad/waaaaddie/wuddiebuck - A dirty, smelly poor person who would probably eat chewing gum that he/she has chiseled off the pavement.
