This page details a list of career underachievements by Serbian former world number one Ana Ivanovic.

Overall[edit | edit source]

  • Since the end of 2008, Ana Ivanovic has won only three singles titles (as opposed to eight beforehand) and, as of 2013, is the only former Grand Slam champion or world number one to have never won a Premier-level title.[1][2]
  • Ivanovic has not defeated any of the WTA's current top four (Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwańska) since defeating Azarenka in the first round of the 2010 Cincinnati Masters.[1] The aforementioned victory over Azarenka marked only her 37th match victory since the beginning of 2009; that figure is significant because it was the same number of matches she won in 2008.
  • Ivanovic was the only year-end top 20 player to not reach a single championship match, and did not defeat any of the eventual WTA Tour Championships qualifiers during the 2012 regular season.[3]
  • At the 2012 Rogers Cup, Ivanovic suffered the ignominy of a double-bagel defeat, at the hands of Italian Roberta Vinci. She is the only former Grand Slam champion or world number one to suffer this indignity. This came just five weeks after she won just one game against Victoria Azarenka at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships.
  • Ivanovic recorded no top ten victories, reached only three quarter-finals all season and did not win any titles in 2009, as her ranking slipped from a year-start number five to a four-year low of 22 by the end of the season.
  • Between the 2009 Rogers Cup and the 2010 Mercury Insurance Open, Ivanovic lost 17 out of 29 matches.[4] It was during this patch in which Ivanovic slipped to world number 65 in July 2010 after losing in the first round at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, only two years after holding the world number one ranking.[5]
  • Ivanovic has, since first entering the top 20 in 2005, finished two seasons outside the top 20, in 2009 and as recently as 2011.[6]
  • The 2013 season saw Ivanovic record her worst ever start to a season, not reaching any quarter-finals until the 2013 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, where she lost in the final eight stage to defending and eventual champion Maria Sharapova in three sets.[7]

Grand Slam tournaments[edit | edit source]

  • As of 2013, Ivanovic currently holds the Open Era record, for any male or female player, for most consecutive Grand Slam tournaments played by a former Grand Slam champion without reaching a quarter-final, with 17 between her triumph at the 2008 French Open and the 2012 US Open non-inclusive.[8] She has since missed another four quarter-finals, all in 2013. By contrast, Roger Federer reached 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals between the 2004 Wimbledon Championships and the 2013 French Open inclusive.[9][10]
    • At the 2012 US Open, where she reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final since winning the 2008 French Open, she was heavily defeated by eventual champion Serena Williams, being unable to break Williams' serve during the match.[11]
  • Ivanovic has not beaten a top ten player at a Grand Slam tournament since the aforementioned French Open victory, and has only won one set against any of them (against Victoria Azarenka at the 2013 US Open).[1][12]
  • Ivanovic and Mary Pierce are the only two women to win both the championship and the wooden spoon at the Grand Slam tournaments. Ivanovic's wooden spoon came at Wimbledon in 2010, where she lost in the first round to Shahar Pe'er; who in turn lost in the second round to Angelique Kerber, who lost in the third round to Jarmila Groth, who lost in the fourth round to Venus Williams, who lost in the quarter-finals to Tsvetana Pironkova, who lost in the semi-finals to Vera Zvonareva, who then ultimately lost to Serena Williams in the final.[13]
  • At the 2008 US Open, Ivanovic, seeded first, was upset in the second round by little-known French qualifier Julie Coin, then ranked 188th in the world. This means as the biggest gulf between a lowly ranked opponent and a world number one.[14] This came just two months after Ivanovic was upset at Wimbledon by Chinese wildcard entrant Zheng Jie.
