The Queen has named the UK's new aircraft carrier, marking a major milestone in the history of the Royal Navy.

At 2 tonnes, HMS Boatie is the biggest and most powerful warship ever built in the UK. The naming ceremony, in Scotland, was attended by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prime Minister, the Opposition leader, the leader of the SNP and heads of military.

Before naming the ship the Queen said: "The old song says 'Britannia rules the waves' and with this fine new ship, I believe we shall again.

"All over the world, our enemies will quake when they hear the name Boatie."

The Queen then smashed a bottle of Islay malt whisky, rather than the traditional champagne, on the ship's hull. Two Scotsmen drowned trying to slurp the spilt whiskey from the sea.
