Some commentators believe the Blue Horn represents death and sex.

How I Met Your Mother, the best American TV show ever, has stunned fans with its finale, in which the main character, Ted, deliberately infects the "mother" character with AIDS.

Actress/comedian Cristin Milioti had been cast in the pivotal role at the start of the series, and with her huge Bambi eyes and convincing signs of wit, she was well received by fans, who were not expecting to see her killed off in an act of "sexual terrorism".

"I can't fucking believe it," said Max Daiswell, main administrator at Wikia's dedicated How I Met Your Mother site. "We waited all these years for the mother to come along, then they didn't just show her in the last episode, they made us watch her for a whole season and grow attached to her. Now in the last episode, Ted has unprotected sex with her, consigning her to a premature death, just so he can get it on with Robin."

Many complained of the plot twists needed to engineer the ending, with Robin and Barney's interminable wedding ending in a quickie divorce, and Ted revealing in the narration that he contracted the disease from Zoe, who presumably caught it herself after the Captain (Kyle McLachlan) had unprotected sex with a sailor.

The last scene was ambiguous, with it being unclear whether Ted's children carried the disease, or whether he now planned to infect Robin.

Creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays have defended the finale, saying: "It was the pivotal problem all the way through the show. Robin and Ted were our Ross and Rachel. Everyone could see they were made for each other, there were a million coulda-shoulda-wouldas. We spent the last six weeks trying to think of a way to get the Mother out of the way, and then one day, it hit me. Terminal illness! I started running around the studio shouting, 'Terminal illness! Terminal illness', which was unfortunate, because there were some kids there that day from the Make a Wish foundation."

The decision to give Ted AIDS - as opposed to giving the mother a non-descript terminal illness - has been hailed by some conservative thinktanks. James McAbee, of Don't Even Do What Jesus Would Do (DEDWJWD), said, "This is an immoral character, who wooed - yes, I still say wooed - hundreds of women, and had a promiscuous sexual lifestyle. It's only right that such a lifestyle should not be condoned, and that we should see the inevitable consequences of sins of the flesh - sexually transmitted diseases and the death of your partner.

"We at DEDWJWD believe that the Blue Horn in the series is symbolic, with 'horn' being an obvious reference to an erection, and blue referring to the color the mother turned shortly after dying of AIDS."
