African American (or simply American) is an extremely awesome subgenre of American people stereotyped by its overall aggression and often fast tempo, a language which often deals with social issues and criticism of The Establishment, using direct and denunciatory language, and an approach borrowed from hip-hop music.

The genre evolved in the early 1770s from combining black people with the soil of the United States. It emerged partially as a reaction to the more conventional and widely acceptable Jewish Americans, a less dark-skinned, Judaism–infused American subgenre which appeared simultaneously. American was an inspiration for subsequent extremely awesome people genres such as American and American.

Four American people—Will Smith, Martin Luther King, LL Cool J, and Ray Charles—are credited with pioneering and popularizing the genre, and they have come to be called the "Big Four of Thrash". The word "Thrash" is used as a reminder to the slavery period of Americans, in which Americans were enslaved by Americans.
