I got a question for any n0n-n00bs (if you're a n00b ad you know the answer, feel free to respond, but...I will decapitate you, so...yeah, might wanna reconsider): How does one go about creating a new category? I want to make one called [[category:Things that invoke feelings of doom]]. Don't tell me if the category sux, i just wanna know if it can be made or I need some kind of consent or something. Or something...--Señor DiZtheGreat Honor me! CUN AOTM ( Worship me!) (Praise me!) (Join me!) AMEN! 01:04, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Same way you create any page, just don't forget the prefix "Category:"---Asteroid B612B612.jpg (aka Rataube) - Ñ 01:07, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
After you create it you should add it to a couple a pages, but don't go crazy with it, or you'll probably end up banned. HOMESTAR ME!!! TURTLE ME!!! t o m p k i n s  blah. ﺞوﻦ וףה ՃՄ ண்ஸ ފއހ วอฏม +տ trade websites 03:02, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
And remember to add another category to it, so it doesn't appear in Special:Uncategorizedcategories. ~ Ghelæ talkcontribs 07:01, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
MADE IT. But i got one more question: I added the category to "Category:Things that may be out to get you"; if I add an article to Category:Things that invoke feelings of doom, should I delete the link to Category:Things that may be out to get you, since it's just a sub-category of it? That's what I did with Death, but I'm not exactly sure if that's standard procedure or not. --Señor DiZtheGreat Honor me! CUN AOTM ( Worship me!) (Praise me!) (Join me!) Go ahead. There's no standard procedure for most things. Ever. ~ Ghelæ talkcontribs 14:23, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

No. Articles in sub-categories aren't automatically included in the "main" category. It doesn't work like that. A sub-category is just a category that's included in another category; you could have two categories as sub categories of each other if you liked. So don't remove other categories to put yours in. Alright, I'll change it. I just thought that's what you were supposed to do. --Señor DiZtheGreat Honor me! CUN AOTM ( Worship me!) (Praise me!) (Join me!) AMEN! 18:30, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
If a category is overly broad, vague and badly overcrowded (Category:People, for instance) then moving things out of that one main category into carefully-selected and related subcategories (such as Category:Actors, Category:Doctors, Category:Entrepreneurs, Category:Historical figures, Category:Inventors, Category:Politicians, Category:Scientists, whatever) sometimes does make sense. However, on this site we do end up with categories and subcategories created merely as a joke, and it doesn't make sense to pull articles out of valid existing categories just for the sake of being able to drop them into the likes of Category: Things that smell funny. As such, tagging an article with both a subcategory and that subcategory's parent, while not encouraged on en.wikipedia, may make sense here if one is a regular category and the other merely some tag created as a joke. --Carlb 03:50, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
Can we please stop saying the word "category" now? This page is making my brain hurt. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue) 01:32, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
As far as categories go, just add them to enough articles that make sense. If you're afraid of being banned, don't add them to articles where you don't think they'll make sense (aka spamming). I will be your advocate if you add a category with good intentions. Crazyswordsman...With SAVINGS!!!! (T/C) 01:57, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
