No one's voting. This is an issue. No one is nominating, either, but we still have a lot of quasi-featureds left so that isn't yet an issue. Still, no one is voting at all.

I suggest we start featuring every other day now. You could go on a rant about how "writing is the real problem", and maybe it is, but this is still a good counter-measure to the voting problem, not the writing problem, and no matter how hard we try, it will be impossible to wave a magic wand and get more people to start writing instantaneously.

  • I say start featuring every other day as soon as we go below the double digit vote. ~Jewriken.GIF 11:41, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Yeah. We should probably start now actually, so few votes is pretty terrible. Back in the day we would get 20ish votes all the time :/ --Sir DJ ~ Irreverent OZ! Noobaward.jpg Wotm.jpg Unbooks mousepad.PNG GUN.png 11:45, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
I came very close to starting a post saying almost the same thing. Go to every other day and don't go back to every day until features start to get a minimum of about 15 votes by average. --So So 11:50, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
I think the scariest thing was that back when I was a very little nub, some articles with the votes it takes to get featured now wouldn't even get Quasi'd :( --Sir DJ ~ Irreverent OZ! Noobaward.jpg Wotm.jpg Unbooks mousepad.PNG GUN.png 14:44, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I was about to say... But, if after the PLS, things don't go back to normal, I do support featuring every other day until the vote count gets higher. -RAHB 12:14, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
The PLS results won't be in for at least three more weeks right? ~Jewriken.GIF 12:17, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

  • We should only feature when there's one above a certain, somewhat variable level. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 15:21, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

I know this may seem nostalgic

But I still really, REALLY like the old format of the VFH page. Sure, it's a little harder to deal with, but with 1/2-1/4 the votes we were getting before, I can live with that. Is there a way to go back to the simpler times of olden days? It'd give us a reminder every day to VOTE DAMN YOU!--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 12:27, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

P.S. Oh, and I think the restrictions on self-noms should be loosened, too. That's the move of mine I most regret, I think.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 12:29, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Brad, This might prevent us needing to loosen the self-nom rule... MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 20:41, Jul 23

Yeah, I miss the old way too. The new way takes a long time to vote and that might be the source of VFH laziness. --THE 13:02, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
what was the old way? --SirGerrycheeversGunTalk 13:15, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
The new way has every nom as a subpage templatey thingy. The old way had every nom on one page, with each nom as a subheader. This had the handy side-effect of having the VFH page pop to the top of your watchlist every time someone voted, encouraging a mix of neurosis (when you had a page of your own on VFH), and curiosity (when someone voted on a different page). Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 15:19, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Tl;dr version. VFD for features. Lieutenant THEDUDEMAN Dude ... Totally UOTM KUN GotA F@H 16:21, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
The whole watchlist thing is probably a huge factor in the less voting. Took me ages to get used to checking the VFH page all the time, rather than waiting for it to pop up. I miss the old way too, but I'm not sure whether (other than the watchlist thing) the change would make much change in how many people vote. -RAHB 18:22, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Simple question... How much effort would it actually be to go back to the old style format of voting on VFH? We could try it for a short time, and see what happens? It works fine at VFD... MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 13:08, Jul 25
Works fins at VFD? We get fewer voters there, in general... --UU - natter UU Manhole.gif 13:13, Jul 25
From a featuring point of view, it's much easier doing with the current system. This is all looking for an artificial solution to the problem. People who wants to vote will vote. People who don't give a shit wouldn't give a shit even when that thing pops up on their watchlist. ~Jewriken.GIF 13:17, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm against the every-other-day featuring

It hasn't been done before, right? So we'd have 365 features in 2006, 365 features in 2007, and then.. like maybe 320 features in 2008? Ugh. You may as well stick a permanent "This website is dying; nothing to see here, move along" template on the front page. I'd rather we slog through and feature the highest-ranked articles, even if the vote falls into the mid-single digits, before we start with the infrequent updates. And frankly, no offense to Woody, who's a very good writer, but it's bothered me that the current feature has been up there for almost 40 hours. It's being double-featured because we're admitting we can't write something that good every day? Oh, boy. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 15:13, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

You're quite mistaken. Changing the feature every day is, in fact, quite new. Up until a year and something ago, we used to change features every two-three-four days, all in accordance with RC's mood. ~Jewriken.GIF 15:15, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Um, I actually agree with Hyperbole here. We're going through a slow period right now, it'll come back around. It's summer and most people are focused on girls (or boys) in skimpy bathing suits and not writing (or reading) uncyc articles. Instead of changing our methods to compensate for this slow down (and admit defeat? NEVAR!!!) we should just move along. What difference does it make if an article gets featured with 15 votes or 25 votes anyway? Who cares? It's not like we're going to run out of days to feature articles on... -OptyC Sucks! Icons-flag-us.png CUN15:55, 24 Jul

Not just because of his thoughtful parenthesis I'm going to agree with Opty (and Hype) here. It's been mentioned on this thred that PLS probably has something to do with the slowdown too. And I think it's probably a good idea to slacken the self nomming rule too. I mean good writers on this site try before even wanting to slef nom anyway. People (noobs and IP's) that self nom articles only happens occasionally and they rarely seem to take heed of the rules anyway. I also hardly see much problem with the number of people voting but I've not been around for too long and I geuss i could vote more often anyway. proposal

what if we still only featured articles for one day, but then if the following day no VFH article qualified, we just put a random previosuly featured article on the front page? this would avoid uncyc seeming 'stale', inspire people to write better, and put the spotlight back onto deserving articles that are stuffed away in the best of category. tell me you wouldn't want to see articles like Bears and Moon hoax back on the front page? SirGerrycheeversGunTalk 17:10, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, there's been a mention or two about how the standard of featured articles right at the start of Uncyc's life wasn't that great. So that issue might need to be sidestepped. And of course, there's the "featured one year ago today" box, which does a similar job. But I kind of like the idea in theory. --UU - natter UU Manhole.gif 17:24, Jul 24

Mooses, actually. I miss that big lug. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 17:59, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Yeah. The whole "featuring" idea was Moose's, I believe. "We should put one of my articles on the front page every day. So everyone can see the best of Uncyclopedia when they first show up." Maybe it wasn't at the beginning. And maybe that was me, and not Mooses. Oh well, I'm with Modus that mooses should return post-haste.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 20:41, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Because if it's a list on Uncyc, "worst" probably describes it well in at least one form of categorization. No need to bother with specifics. -RAHB 00:19, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
You wouldn't have to ask if you've read it.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 02:15, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, I hate to perpetuate an ongoing joke to more than...one...two...three...four? Four headers, but I felt the need to REALLY test this whole header name limit thing. I also felt the urge to try to see if I could fill, like, half of this page with just this header alone. I think that would be a pretty interesting feat. If a bit annoying. In fact, rather annoying indeed. But then again, I doubt anybody would really care about it. As evidenced by the last two sections. You know, it's funny how all forums tend to end up in a string of nonsensical posts like this. Well, it used to be funny. Then it started happening so very often. But I digress, as I still find it mildly funny. Funny enough to further perpetuate the joke anyways. That's what I'm doing here, and I'm just still typing so I can make this header all the more long. Hmmm.....maybe I should throw some caps in? CAPS CAPS CAPS CAPS....nah, that's kinda dumb. Oh well, I guess I'm done here. Looks like I didn't quite fill half the page. But I've lost interest.

tl;dr. For -OptyC Sucks! Icons-flag-us.png CUN15:25, 25 Jul

Personally, I am dismayed by the fact that all this header nonsense has caused us to discontinue discussion on the original topic - whether articles on VFH should be featured daily, or tri-weekly, or whenever the ops get around to it.

Ideally, I'd I would like to at least know the featuring schedule. You see, when I have an article that appears to be up for the feature the next day, and then nothing gets featured the next day, and then the day after that, a new article shoots past it by one vote, and then the next day, I don't know if there's a feature - well, this causes me an existential crisis. My life no longer makes sense in the context of the universe, causing me to become disconsolate. Either that, or the existential crisis has been brought on by the divorce and bankruptcy. But I think it's the uneven featuring schedule.

Or, maybe I should say, the lack of featuring schedule entirely. Why do we do this? Why do we blather on endlessly and then come to no decision whatsoever? I could start one of those "vote" things, but within minutes, it would be filled with the word "pants." Which would be amusing, because pants are amusing, as are people with bad teeth who think they are underwear. But amusement would not get me any clarity on the frequency with which articles are features. It would not give me any closure on this whole issue of whether having articles featured is going to draw out into a multiple-month-long process where I have to wake up in the middle of the night just hoping - hoping - that I squeezed out one more vote. It's like with my ex-wife. She lives like a mile away. And she can't figure out how not to break her computer. So how the hell am I supposed to get closure?

No, I'm serious! Why don't you tell me, admins! Since you apparently have no administrative process by which I can dig my way out of the hell that is VFH uncertainty, why don't you tell me what to do about my ex-wife? Do I blow her off entirely? Leave town? Burn her apartment building down? My God! Is it just me, or is this room getting smaller?
How small can you go?!

Pants! Al right... Actual suggestion.

Would it help VFH if we put a link with some text encouraging voting onto {{welcome}}, as well as our personalised welcome pages? It's rare to see the new guys voting over there... MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 16:12, Jul 25

Don't do it: it will encourage people to vote randomly, not read articles, etc.   Le Cejak <14:01, 06 Aug 2008>
Possibly, but not any more so than right now. If you were going to vote randomly, people would do it already. Some people probably do. It's the article more that really encourages that though, not as much the voting process. If I wanted to vote on every article on VFH, I could still probably do it in about a minute. It's about the instant, lazy mentality that I can read without touching the keyboard, but I can't then vote without touching the keyboard. One of these days, I'll be able to post in the forum without touching the keyboard. I'll just have two "agreement" and "rebuttal" buttons, as well as an "eject." The eject won't save me from an argument I'm failing, it's just fun. -RAHB 14:06, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
If we could structure VFH more along the lines of Voatse.cx, I'd be in.   Le Cejak <14:09, 06 Aug 2008>
Encouraging lazy votes is proabably not the best thing--Sycamore (Talk) 14:12, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
I gotta agree with Cajek and Sycamore. If you're too lazy to do a few clicks and type a few words on your keyboard then you're probably too lazy to give an article sufficient attention. Articles need attention, or else they become deviant when they hit puberty and start stealing Japanese girls' panstu. --S0.S0S.0S.0S0 14:16, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
I agree with So So about agreeing with Cajek and Sycamore. I think there are things to be said on the vote page, comments, and "you are so close to getting my vote" stuff. I think you should say what your issue is, and whatnot. Also, it does seem to be asking for people to be lazy. The Woodburninator (woodtalk) (woodstalk) 14:26, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, the thing about that is, voting doesn't have to be one click every time. But not everybody always posts a comment on every single vote. Some people put up the For and are done with it. I do it myself a lot, whether because everybody else already said what I wanted to say, or whether I had nothing to say but that it deserved a feature. If you want to leave a comment, go type a comment. The automated voting would be so that simply posting "For" -~~~~" wouldn't require more effort than necessary, if the user decides not to leave a comment. It wouldn't take away the ability for the commenter to click edit and put in their opinions anyway. -RAHB 18:27, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I think it's worth clarifying that making voting easier is not the same as encouraging poor voting.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 18:22, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Against. Too American-centric. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb.png (talk to me)
tl;dr. We should make it easier to vote. Possibly by making it a one click deal or something. Man, I am so high. -OptyC Sucks! Icons-flag-us.png CUN20:18, 6 Aug
Is this kinda what you mean by one-click voting?

Is this kinda what you folks are talking about? - P.M., WotM, & GUN, Sir Led Balloon Baloon.gif(Tick Tock) (Contribs) 20:21, Aug 6

Yeah. Except it should be less ugly. And for VFH. And maybe include pie. So, no. -OptyC Sucks! Icons-flag-us.png CUN20:37, 6 Aug
No. It needs sig and time, for tracking purposes/antijackassery. This is too easy to mess with. Some people would do so, just to take over Eternia. By "some people", I mean Skeletor. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 20:40, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
That too. -OptyC Sucks! Icons-flag-us.png CUN20:53, 6 Aug
More slander about Skeletor...--Sycamore (Talk) 20:57, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

My solution - the concisest yet

Write more articles, don't fuck with VFH. -- ill-bred Ape (defibrillate) (Riot Porn) 21:13, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

With all the voting and posting in the dump; who's got the time to write? -OptyC Sucks! Icons-flag-us.png CUN21:16, 6 Aug
Writing is a problem that cannot be fixed by the community, since it rests on the will of the individual. Now, VFH is an organism that can be controlled by the community, and is in need of improvement. Therefore, we should take it unto ourselves to make a motion to improve it and you should shut up :) --Littleboyonly.jpg TKFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFCK Oldmanonly.jpg 21:31, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
While we are tinkering and making minor improvements we are not writing. -- ill-bred Ape (defibrillate) (Riot Porn) 21:48, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Who says the tinkerers and the writers have to be the same people? -RAHB 21:58, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Nothing. But that is what happens. -- ill-bred Ape (defibrillate) (Riot Porn) 22:08, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
It'll likely be Spang making the script or whatever. He doesn't really write that much anymore. And all the other members of the community are still free to write whatever they want. I'm not going to be tweaking VFH. You're not going to be tweaking VFH. Most of us aren't going to be tweaking VFH. It'll be one or two people who specialize in it. I don't see where the problem is there. -RAHB 22:18, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Maybe I'll write something instead just to make you wrong :P I was never one for VFH'ing many of the articles I had a hand in anyway. Spang talk 01:41, 07 Aug 2008

You wanted one click voting?

I made an early version that works. Probably. At the moment it just adds a voting box to the article when you follow a link from VFH, but I'll probably add one to the nomination page too, and make various things better. Try it out by adding the line

importScript('User:Spang/vote.js');

to your js. Let me know what you think! Spang talk 20:27, 09 Aug 2008

Everybody please form a single file line behind me for blowing Spang. He also accepts gifts of gold and other forms of currency. -RAHB 22:35, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
