Anu Malik is a very successfull Hindi music director in India.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Anu Malik (Hindi: अनु मलिक) (born 2 November 1960), born Anwar Sardaar Malik, is a famous music director in the Hindi film industry. Son of veteran music director Sardar Malek, Anu Malik made his debut as a music composer in the year 1977. After a considerable period of struggle, the 90's welcomed Anu with hits like 'Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee', 'Baazigar', 'Jaanam' and many more. Today, Anu is one of the most successful music directors in the Hindi music industry.

The beginning of the millennium saw him winning the National Award for his soulful music for J.P Dutta's 'Refugee', and also the Filmfare Special Jury Award for his outstanding contribution to music. He has also won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award for 'Main Hoon Na' and 'Baazigar'. He was nominated 14 times for the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director.

Anu Malik has been judging the television phenomenon 'Indian Idol' for the last three seasons and continues to be a member of the jury for the fourth season as well. He has also rendered many of his own compositions like Garam Chaye Ki Pyali, Gori Gori and the recent Meri Jane Jigar.

He is a versatile music director, giving music to different kinds of films. He has created many hit tunes for the Indian music industry. In his great music career he never reused his songs' tuning manner as his every song is very different from each other on the basis of Instrument arrangement and Vocals' tuning format.

He is specially known for his incredible use of Tabla in some of his hit songs like Taal Pe Jab and Mere Humsafar from the movie Refugee, Tumse Milke Dilka Jo Haal of Main Hoon Na, Eli Re Eli of Yaadein and Baazigar O Baazigar of Baazigar. He has made music for Refugee, Josh, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Fiza, Yaadein, Aks, Asoka, Filhaal and Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai in just 2000 & 2001. The movie Baazigar received Filmfare award for best music direction.

Anu Malik shot to fame in the 1990s with Baazigar in 1992, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee, Jaanam, Sir, Tehelka, Chamatkar, Maa and the next step was the Filmfare award for Baazigar beating Laxmikant-Pyarelal for Khalnayak in 1994. In 2001, he composed music for movies like Aks, Fiza, Filhaal and Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai.

His recent work includes Yamla Pagla Deewana, Jaan-E-Mann, and Kambakkht Ishq.

Collaboration[edit | edit source]

His collaborations with J.P.Dutta, famous film director, has also provided India with major hits. These include Border in 1997, Refugee in 2000, LOC Kargil in 2003 and Umrao Jaan in 2006.

Malik has worked with several playback singers including Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik , Kavita Krishnamurthy, Anuradha Paudwal, Shaan, Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam, K.K., Sunidhi Chauhan and many more.

Kumar Sanu rendered his voice in most of the Hits composed by Anu Malik. After the come-back in 1990s with hits like Sir, Phool Aur Angaar, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee and Vijaypath, he use to prefer Kumar Sanu above any other singer. Baazigar, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Imtihaan, Chamatkar, Gambler, Akele Hum Akele Tum are some of the examples, then in 1998 Anu Malik blasted with Duplicate, Kareeb, Soldier , Aarzoo and finally Ishq Vishk (2003) are some of the successful results of collaboration between Anu Malik and Kumar Sanu.

He also collaborated with singer Sonu Nigam. He gave the singer a big break with the song Ke Ghar Kab Aaoge in the film Border in 1997, which put the singer in the limelight and earned him several award nominations. Their collaboration has continued since, with Anu Malik providing Sonu Nigam with a variety of songs, including hits like Main Hoon Na and Tumse Milke Dilka Jo Haal in the film Main Hoon Na, which earned the singer several awards again. They have worked together in several films, including Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo, Border, Fiza, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Jaan-E-Mann, LOC: Kargil, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and "Refugee".

In 2006 movie Umrao Jaan, Anu Malik launched his daughter Anmol Malik as a singer in the song Bitiya Na Kijo.
